Venom Extraction: Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake
Переглядів 207 тис.10 років тому
The Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake is the largest and most venomous snake in North America. I took this video while visiting the Reptile Discovery Center in Deland, FL. They are one of only 7 facilities that publicly show venom extraction. I highly recommend a visit if you are ever in the area. www.reptilediscoverycenter.com/

A "beautiful" lethal snake? Professor Hagrid wouldn't have put it any different.

The video says that the cobra is "still" common in many areas of asia. Unfortunately, they are a protected species here in Taiwan. I'd prefer their protected species status be revoked and to have a bounty put out on them. I had a close encounter with one when I was walking on a sidewalk next to a river in Taipei. I didn't know it was there until I heard the loud hiss it makes when striking, and after I jumped away I noticed its head retracting into the dense brush between the sidewalk and the river. Fortunately I wasn't bitten, and indeed cobras strike even from out of range as a warning, but it was a very close call. That head was about a half a meter from my leg when I saw it, but I don't know how many inches I was from getting a bite. There are a lot of stray dogs in that park (Taiwan doesn't capture and kill them like in the USA, and people who get tired of their dogs just let them loose in the park), and stray dogs don't seem likely to get antivenom after a cobra bite.

It must suck to be in that room after an earthquake spills all those bins. I disagree with the snake-handler's comment that it is unfortunate that this rattlesnake is in decline, because (as he says) they're dangerous. I had a close encounter recently with a cobra when I was walking on a sidewalk near a river in Taiwan. I didn't realize it was there until I heard the hissing noise it makes when it is striking, about a foot and a half from my right foot. Fortunately, I was just out of range, but I wish they'd put some mongooses from India in that park to eat the snakes. If they don't want them to go native, they can only import boys or post-menopausal mongooses.

Piney flat woods, and border areas betweem upland habitats, and low-lying swamps, are the very areas land developers like to clear out land, destroying their habitats with bulldozers, to build homes and golf courses. That's why their numbers are becoming increasingly rare. The species should be put on the endangered species list.

Snakes aren’t aggressive they’re defensive. Almost 100% of the time if you leave it alone it will flee from you. People mistake them coming at them as an attack when in reality their hiding spot is probably behind you and they just want to go there.
